Not as much: using 1 TB drives one would need 300 drives (min) to organize fault tolerant storage. with today's price about $150 per 1 TB the price of the drives would be $45 000. Well, let's double it considering the fact that the drives have to be placed somewhere - $100 000. 100 000 (or 200 000 or 300 000) isn't a huge investment and the prices of mediamax were relevant to their expences, I believe.
If you offer 100 GB per person this does not mean that you have to have 100 GB x number of users storage - just a few of them will use the full capacity.
The storage space isn't a problem, traffic - can become it, but mediamax limited the traffic.
Thus I consider their prices to be quite realistic, no matter what anyone else wanting easy earnings charges. A highly optimized infrastructure can be profitable with their prices, providing it has enough users.
A personally used mediamax to have an offsite backup copies and to store some data which I'd describe as "it will hardly ever be needed, but who knows, do not want to spent drive space on storing it, but can put on mediamax".
With lost backups I have now to make a revision of what has to be done again, arrange an alternative storage, etc - this means lost time.
The data I lost their forever is not really valuable for me but loosing it in such silly way - just because of the people who promised to keep it seem to have simply deleted them without any warning - it is complete nonsense.
Anyway, my personal complain is not about lost data but about the fact that these guys in fact sold non-existing service.
Such business is perhaps criminal, even if people pay for it voluntary. If the seller does not possess what he is selling and is not going to provide the service sold - I think practically in any country it is considered to be criminal activity.
(WHAT A NIGHTMARE!)
