Wal-Mart - Reading Glasses

On Jan 17th of this year I bought close to eighty dollars of merchandise from the West City, Illinois store, which included a $1.50 reading glasses that the cashier put in a seperate sack...on my way out the theft alarms went off and I was stopped as any shoplifter would be...the item was checked and verified that I had paid for the glasses...and without apology...I went on my way...now the problem that I have with that is the embarassment and humiliation that stemmed from the incident...I spent 15 years as a Police Officer and it was not a great feeling to be accused of stealing...I think that when this happens...the cashier that didn't properly scan for release of the itms should be reprimanded and have to pay for the item in question...and it should be given free to the customer as an apology for the embarassment...This has happened to me on two different occasions...including once at the Herrin Illinois store...Their safety net is great...but they need some changes in their treatment policy of the customer during and after the incident...and there is no doubt many others have gone thru the same type of humiliation...it's pretty embarassing...and a bad situation to e put in...

I agree with "nitaldsmom" that one should not blame Wal-Mart for the security procedures but, rather, the shoplifters who make them necessary.

To be frank, I have been stopped a few times in the past, most often at Wal-Mart, and been found that the alarm went off because the checkout clerk forgot to "demagnetize" the security chip in the DVD or whatever it was. Big deal! Just show your receipt that indicates that you bought everything in your bags and move on. If you truly expect an apology, then you will be sadly disappointed again and again. No store (including the one that I have owned and operated for the past 20 years) offers an apology for false positives on the shoplift scanners. We just write it off as a mild inconvenience, just as our customers do.

If you truly have been a police officer for fifteen years, then you should have developed a thicker skin by now. Just relax and worry more about something that is worthy of your attention, not something that is completely meaningless in the grand scheme of life.
