Recently, on 7-29-2008, I made a payment (on account #7510-7900-3603-4159) by phone because I wanted it to get to the company on time (due date was 8-5-2008). I wrote down the amount I paid, $56.29. Two weeks later, on 8-14-2008, I got a phone call at work from CitiFlex asying I was one cent--one penny--short on that payment, and when was I going to pay up? I laughed at the guy, and said that was their mistake, that I had paid $56.29, as I had written down. He stuck to his story, and I ended up paying one cent, one penny--$0.01--at that time, over the phone. Then I asked what was my next payment due, and how much. He answered, $97 and change, which included a $39.00 late fee for the one cent "underpayment." Again I laughed, and told him he sounded like an okay guy, but did he think maybe he was working for the Mafia? him if he was working for the Mafia. For example, I asked him if he was finding other so-called "under-payments" on his list of calls he was making. Sure, he answered. Some for 5 cents, some for 50 cents, some for a dollar.... So, I said, do you see a pattern here? Do you think this is real? Or made up? A scam? The caller spoke with an Hispanic accent, and was no doubt just doing his job, calling deadbeats. But I think it is a scam. And somebody with authority--like possibly you--to audit and monitor these things, should look into this company. And probably other companies, while you're at it.
