I have a home in Rancho Mirage, California and the Von's Store ( Safeway ) near my home was just annouced to be closing. For the past 5 years this store has operationally been a total disgrace. Their in stock position has to be the worst in the nation. On a trip to this store a few days prior to Thanksgiving last year I observed two elderly ladies shopping from an earlier prepared list. One turned to the other and said Mabel this is the eighth item on our list that this store is out of stock on. This is common place at this store. I have personally shopped this store and found it to be out of stock on such items as non-fat milk, lettuce, bananas and numerous other items. Closing this store is not a bricks and mortar issue nor an issue of access it is simply poor management. To my surprise I visited my next nearest Vons store this evening in Palm Desert and guess what they were out of non-fat milk and at least 3 other items on my list. Here we go again. Well Safeway, how long will it take until you close this store because of poor management? I have previously worked for Safeway for 20 years 3 decades ago. I know the supermarket business and since Steve Burd has been its CEO I have continuously seen standards fall. Perhaps it is time for a change at the top and get someone in place that has some operational experience.
