One thing I just found out - Con Ed charges you a "security deposit" if your bill is late twice within a year's time. They don't tell you they are doing this - it just shows up on your bill and suddenly you owe about $300 more than you thought you did. That "security deposit" is to be used to pay any further bills that are late - and there's no way to get out of paying it.

Just a word to the wise.
