I was recommended to this place by an antique motorcycle rebuild shop. They said that they specialized in small jobs and could handle much of the rebuilding machining tasks required in my motorcycle rebuild project. So I decided to try them out by having 4 simple tools I required built by them. These were very simple, a round plate with slots to use in a puller, flattening the end of a socket so that it fit on a thinner nut, wielding some user supplied rods and nuts into a simple spring compressor and wielding three rectangular plates together to build a clutch compressor. About 3-4 hours of work.

As you enter the shop, you have to pick your way through a maze of parts, rubbish etc. to find the owner. Clearly organization is not a part of this business. However, I dropped off my detailed drawings for the apparently knowledgeable owner. I told him I would be back in three weeks, would it be done then? He indicated yes and I left.

After three weeks and no calls, I called to see about the status. Seems he had been sick for a while and could not get to them. He had also had a bunch of other orders come in that he just had to get to quickly. I would have to wait another 2 weeks. So after those 2 weeks I called again and found that nothing had been done. His excuse was that he was not feeling well and had not gotten to them.

Now I am a reasonable man, and understand that people have sick days, but for 5 weeks? Come on, other orders came in and were done by this guy. Does he really expect me to believe that no orders of any kind left the shop in those five weeks? Clearly he should be required to tell all new customers:

“I really don’t care a lot about your order and it is at the bottom of my list of things to do. Sure, if I have nothing to do I might just get to it, but everybody else has higher priority than you.”

This would allow customers to accurately evaluate the job prior to having him do it. So I picked up my drawings and went to Versa Tech. They can’t do all the things I need, but when it comes to straight fabrication jobs they are done on time and correctly.
