I visited the K-Mart store in Eagleville, Pa, looking for a few simple things, including a door stop. You know, those small wedges you place under a door to keep it open. After 20 minutes of looking unsuccessfully, and not seeing any employees around, I walked to customer service. After a long wait, the store manager finally came and escorted me to where he thought they were displayed. We could not find door stops. I gave up and went to the checkout area where only one register was open being staffed by slowpoke grandma. The line was a mile long. After an eternity, another employee opens another register and all the people in line behind me who hadn't waited as long as me went rushing over, leaving me the last one in my line. Grandma proceeded to take forever checking out the customers in front of me. This was an awful experience.

I work for a K-mart in Eastern Indiana, and I am sorry you had a bad experience. I am the service desk manager, and I will tell you right now that our policy states that if there are more than 2 people in the line another lane is to be opened or they are to take customers at the service desk. My K-mart is a low volume store which I am guessing that the one in Eagleville is too by what you described, but that is still no excuse, there have been instances where I have personally come out from behind the service desk and assisted customers all over the store, because I have been there long enough to know the store like the back of my hand, and I don't like to leave customers waiting. If you are ever passing through eastern Indiana on I-70 swing by Connersville it is about 5-10 minutes south of the interstate. It is not a big town (population of 20,000), but we have some great places to eat(Kunkels Drive-In, known nation wide), and a really nice hotel.
