Hot Water Warranty - GE Profile Smart Water Self Cleaning

May 2001 I purchased a 9 yr-40 gal gas tall GEPSW. On December 30 I noticed a small pool of water coming from the bottom of the tank. I called a plumber who informed me that the tank was bad and needed to be replaced. I called GE and had the REP discuss with the plumber the problem. After holding for an hour the REP came on line provided me the case #1784511 and was told to take back to Home Depot at no additional cost to me. Home Depot would simply replace the item as an even exchange. When I arrived at Home Depot they called GE, no mention of the case number, but a discussion pursued with the GE Rep and the Home Depot Rep that only a credit would be provided since the water heater model was no longer available but an upgraded 9 year warranty was available. The Home Depot Rep let me talk to the GE Rep, I explained to him my conversation with the GE Rep and asked him did he have any notation from the case number. The Rep must have had too many phone calls and he abruptly told me that he would only provide a credit and if I didn't like that he would not provide me a credit at all. I asked for a supervisor who also wanted to continue with the credit message. This was unacceptable to me because the Water Heater was defective and I was within the warranty agreement, regardless if I paid a lesser amount in 2001. It became apparent it was an effort to force me to purchase the upgraded model because the credit would only apply if I purchased the 9 year warranty Hot Water Heater. I chose to reinstall the Hot Water I was bringing back since it was only a small leak and research my companies and hot water tanks more thoroughly. I learned also NEVER purchase a hot water heater with more than 6 years as a warranty and to stay away from GE products (or any product under a different name), Home Depot, and Lowe's.

Bought 40gallon water heater at lowes, 4 yrs ago. Then wouldn`t heat water, called GE , said parts were uder warrenty but I was required to dissasemble to diagnose which was the bad part, after a couple of screws and bolts, they said it wasn`t a part problem call gas company..I called a local plumber who fixed the problem. I wish they would just admit they really don`t have a warrenty..
