Big 5 Sporting Goods Complaint
Gave me a refund and took my money!

I am writing this so no one gets in the same situation I was put in. About 3 months ago I had a $50 purchase that I needed to return to Big 5 Sporting Goods . A younger girl helped me with the refund, and gave me a receipt print out that she said I needed to bring back when I wanted to use the store credit. Two weeks ago I went in and found something I wanted to purchase with the credit, and I was informed that the piece of receipt looking paper I had was not valid. I got very upset and asked to speak to the manager. He told me that whoever helped me months ago should have given me a gift card with the money loaded on it. We went back in forth, with me saying "I never got one" like 10 times. He said,"That is impossible because she couldn't have printed this out without first issuing the card." It came down to me finally saying "what can you do for me because I am owed this money?" He took my receipt and told me that he would call me back after he looked over the security tapes to find out who it was that had helped me because I couldn't remember. Needless to say....it has been many days now and he never called back. I have gone in several times as well and the manager is always gone.

They are lying to you if they say the manager is gone, there is ALWAYS a manager on duty at all Big 5s. Ask for the customer service phone number and if you still have the receipt for the return and the gift card the ammount was credited to has not been used a new gift card can be issued.
Mark,
Big 5 as with many other retailers will collect personal information in an attempt to prevent rapid refunders and return fraud, which is a huge problem for retailers. Retailers that collect this information put it into a computer, and only their Loss Prevention department has access to said information. By collecting this information they can then say "ahh John Doe has returned 39 pairs of shoes within a month, maybe we should look into other returns with matching customer information. In the end loss prevention tactics like this save the retailers money so that they don't have to mark up prices as much to cover loss. I'm guessing you dealt with a manager who was newly promoted, or someone matching your description had been engaging in return fraud or rapid refunding in the area, since typically at Big 5s they will ask for an ID and if none is given they will proceed without an ID, possibly only asking for your first and last name.
I had bought some shoes there, paid cash. I went back to exchange them the next day because they felt a little large. The shoe dept was very busy that day and only one guy was working it. the 'Manager' and his flunkie were standing by the cash register shooting the breeze. I waited for tweny minutes then just deciced to get my money back.
They would only give me a refund if I gave them my drivers license number and a credit card. Funny they didn't ask for ID when I paid Cash...I refused to give them my personal info. wht did they need it? I paid cash, had a receipt, just give me back my money. I went back and forth with the baboon and he just walked away With customer service like that no wonder thier stock is in the toilet.
I even sent an email to thier corporate office....twice...no reply.
I will never go to big zero again and bad mouth them every chance I get.
