Gaggle free filtered email for students and schools

When I read in my son's student newsletter that his school was taking opinions from parents on whether or not to create an account with Gaggle ( gaggle.net ) I was a bit upset, initially. I don't want my son's school making the decision for ME that he should even have a school internet account. He's 12 and we monitor his internet use quite heavily. But then we did a little more research and asked some questions and realized that the school really is looking out for our kids' best interests. Kind of like the 'condoms in schools' debate, this one is a little less heated but bears the same question - if our kids are going to do it anyway, shouldn't the safety protocols be in place?
Now, my son has started a blog on the school's Gaggle network and we're discovering he has a real talent for writing!
