DON'T BUY SMART CARPET !!!

In my opinion, Smart Carpet sells a low quality product and does not stand behind their warranty. Below is an edited letter sent to the Better Business Bureau of New Jersey that explains the complaint. The rug in question is at this time still less than 1 year old. I have just contracted another company to replace it at a cost of almost $1,900. The bedrooms do not have to be replaced yet. I have contacted every consumer agency I could think of to no avail. My options are to get another independent inspection, and continue to play that game at my own expense, or contact a lawyer and pay him god knows what.

RE: Smart Carpet 1913 Atlantic Avenue Unit R4 Manasquan, NJ 08736

To whom it may concern, In June of 2007, Smart Carpet installed rugs at my residence at a cost of $2,706.00. The rugs were installed in my living room and hallway, and in two bed rooms. There were several warranties, including a lifetime stain resistant warranty, and a 15 year wear warranty. Several weeks ago (approximately 6 months after installation), we noticed dark patterns forming in the rug. We thought we weren’t as careful as we had thought in keeping the carpet clean, so we had a professional cleaner come in to clean the carpet. The carpet was cleaned on 12/7/2007 at a cost of $80.00. The cleaner stated he was in the business for more than 20 years and would never have believed that our carpet was only 6 months old. He said that it was not dirty, it was worn. On his receipt he wrote, “Light color darker wear + Wear traffic patterns”. Only my wife and I reside here, and we don’t have parties and the like, and no pets. I contacted Smart Carpet. Smart Carpet sent out an independent inspector from Statewide Inspection, who claimed the rug is soiled, pile crush was evident, and no manufacturer’s defects found. Shortly thereafter we received a letter from Smart Carpet stating that they were not at fault, and I could appeal if I wanted to hire my own inspector and they had a different finding. I don’t believe the carpet to be dirty since it was just professionally cleaned. The cleaner actually went over the bad spots several times to be sure it was not dirty. I was not impressed by the inspector’s mention of pile crush and manufacturing defects. In my opinion, nothing should have gone wrong with a quality carpet in that period of time under these traffic conditions. I don’t know anything about carpets, but I believe that Smart Carpet sold me a defective, or a low quality carpet, and are now trying to back out of their warranty. I don’t care what they do with their carpet, but I would like a full refund for the installation and the cleaning. The refund proceeds to be used to get the rug replaced by another company. I'm starting to see the same thing in our bedroom carpet, which sees even less traffic.
