I received an e-mail today stating that my credit limit was lowered from 34,500 to 7,000 based on a "soft inquiry" on my credit report from 2007. I have never had a late payment with them and all of my other accounts with other companies are either paid early or on time. They said that I had "late payments" on one of my accounts. My mortgage is paid on time! I'm not defaulting on anything but yet, I'm getting punished based on the "economy" is what customer service told me. What b.s!! Once I pay my bill off, it'll be a cold day in hell before I ever use American Express again.

I have read your review regarding the lowering of your American Express credit limit based on a "soft inquiry" on your credit report. I have been an AmEx card holder for more than 20 years. I have had in the past AmEx Gold and currently have AmEx Green and AmEx Clear. My credit limit was lowered due to ONE late payment on my BOA credit card. At the time, I was ill and paid everything I could at the time, but was 60 days late on the BOA card. It is the only time in my life and I am 64 years old that I have been late on any credit card and I have NEVER been late on my AmEx cards!! I called and spoke with a rep and was told that due to the "economy" they have to limit the credit extensions to their customers! What a bunch of bs that is and if this is the case, why have my other credit card companies not done the same?? I have superior credit and am attempting to work with BOA to remove the late charge on my credit report, but in the meantime, I agree with you. I will pay off my AmEx card and I will never, never have another one in my lifetime!! If this is the way they do business with really good customers, I don't need them.
