Its simple really. Deliver what you advertise. No one is worse as doing this than Hughesnet . I've been with them for 4 painful years and the story is always the same.

It is always in need of maintenance, which is a time consuming process. After the immediate problem is resolved the system will be working only for a period of a couple of weeks before going down again.

In four years of service, my uptime has been about 40% on the whole. Hours and hours have been spend with technical support resolving problems. I've upgraded the equipment three times and the service level twice.

The bottom line is that even if you are a patient person, this service will not function in todays internet environment because of latency issues, dropped packets, bad connections, and slow speeds. Forget broadband, even the most basic of email services is unusable.

This is certainly NOT how the service is advertised. Hughesnet is not a viable option, even when compared to dialup.

My specific complaint is that even after working with Hughesnet for 4 years, and countless hours to resolve specific non-performance problems now that I want out they still insist on a $400 cancellation fee. That's fair when they are delivering a service, but ridiculous when they can't get me the service. Few other contracts would hold up to that scrutiny.

Forget the hype and add up the complete cost of doing business with Hughesnet, including your time, frustration, and ancillary hidden costs. Add up the equipment charges, the monthly fees, the cost of upgrades, the charged service calls, and then add in another $400 to get out when it all drives you nuts. You will find that Hughesnet is the most expensive and least reliable option you have. Spring for a T-1 and you'll be spending less in the long run.
